THE ROLE:
The Laboratory Assistant 2:
Answers incoming calls and inputs and/or edits cases into computerized system; Acts as liaison to police departments, hospitals and physicians; Types and assembles related paperwork; Checks and documents evidence; Relays information to public; Assists with preparing bodies for identification; May clean and sterilize glassware, utensils and laboratory instruments; May operate basic laboratory equipment; May prepare simple solutions and reagents; May be required to properly handle evidence, prepare biological samples for transportation to outside laboratories, assist with procedures in the in-house histology and anthropology laboratories and transport biological evidence to and from OCME; performs related duties as required.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In a state health, academic or diagnostic laboratory this class is accountable for performing routine technical laboratory work with an emphasis on the preparation of simple as well as moderately complex solutions, stains, culture media and/or reagents, specimens/samples for analysis using simple as well as more advanced techniques and performance of routine technical examinations according to prescribed procedures.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Prepares simple as well as moderately complex solutions, stains, culture media and/or reagents; Prepares specimens/samples for analysis using simple as well as slightly more advanced techniques; Assists in or performs routine technical tests and examinations according to prescribed procedures; Prepares reports and maintains records of laboratory findings; May assist in training lower level laboratory employees in preparatory techniques and checking work for conformity with required procedures; Performs related duties as required.
In addition to those duties listed above, this position:
Registering and gathering information on new cases Rename and upload identification documents Check and documents evidence Releases evidence Act as liaison to police, hospitals, pathologists Relays information to the public Performs in house testing as needed (CO) Train new hires May assist in providing coverage for Lab 3 during absences KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY Knowledge of laboratory equipment, procedures, techniques and terminology; Ability to carry out written and oral instructions; perform calculations according to prescribed procedures; keep technical records and prepare reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE Two (2) years of experience in related laboratory work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the level of a Laboratory Assistant 1 or above.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED College training in the biological or physical sciences may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Preference will be given to candidates with the following experience/training:
Understanding of medical terminology Basic laboratory experience Interpersonal skills, to include oral and written communication Experience in a team lead capacity PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Incumbents in this class must be willing to undergo periodic tests or immunizations for communicable diseases as necessary.
WORKING CONDITIONS Incumbents in this class may occasionally be required to lift standard laboratory equipment, supplies and/or bodies; may be exposed to some risk of injury from such elements as toxic vapors and toxic and/or disease carrying substances; may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
