Job Description
The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in Farmington, CT is seeking a Safety Specialist I responsible for managing all Hazardous Waste, including Universal Waste, as well as some Biological waste and all laboratory generated solid waste, providing the necessary support and service to maintain safe and regulatory compliant waste disposal procedures. This position will also support other EHSS activities such as training, document review and auditing under the guidance of the Manager, EHSS Operations.
Responsibilities:
Manage all pre-shipment collection, sorting, bulking and inventory of all chemical wastes.
Manage all pre-shipment collection, sorting, packaging and inventory of all Universal wastes.
Manage the packaging and material needs as well as shipment schedule for biological wastes.
Manage the proper segregation of laboratory solid wastes and address non-compliance.
Develop and deliver waste management and other EHSS training.
Required Skills
Knowledge of Hazardous Waste Management obtained through a BS degree in Environmental Science or related field or an AA degree in same with 3 years' experience in Hazardous Waste Management activities.
Written and oral communication skills sufficient to permit clear and effective exchange of information with people across a wide diversity of disciplines and levels of sophistication.
Ability to perform physical tasks on a regular basis.
Ability to wear respiratory protection.
Ability to perform on Confined Space Rescue Team and HazMat Response Team.
